Deck Categories

Categories are folders that group your decks together. Use them to keep your decks organised — for example, you might have categories called “Languages”, “Science”, and “Work”.

2.1 — Creating a Category

A category is simply a named folder. Every deck you create must belong to a category, so you need at least one before you can make a deck.

How to create a new category

  1. On the main screen (Decks view), look at the top of the left sidebar. You will see a row of buttons.
  2. Click the New Deck Category button. It is the button that looks like a folder with a plus sign.
  3. A new category immediately appears in the sidebar with a temporary name highlighted in an editable text box.
  4. Type the name you want for your category — for example, “Languages” or “Work Projects”.
  5. Press Enter on your keyboard to confirm the name, or click anywhere else on the screen.
Tip: Category names should be short and descriptive. You can always rename them later if you change your mind.

2.2 — Renaming a Category

You can change the name of any category at any time. Renaming a category does not affect the decks inside it — they stay exactly where they are.

How to rename a category

  1. In the left sidebar, find the category you want to rename.
  2. Click the ? (three-dot menu) button on the right side of the category header. A small menu appears with two options: Rename and Delete.
  3. Click Rename. The category name turns into an editable text box with the current name selected.
  4. Type the new name you want.
  5. Press Enter to confirm the new name, or press Escape to cancel and keep the old name.

2.3 — Deleting a Category

You can only delete a category that is empty — that is, one that has no decks inside it. If the category still contains decks, MnemoDeck will not allow the deletion and will show an error message instead.

How to delete a category

  1. First, make sure the category is empty. Move or delete all decks inside it before proceeding.
  2. In the left sidebar, find the empty category you want to delete.
  3. Click the ? (three-dot menu) button on the right side of the category header. A small menu appears.
  4. Click Delete. The category is removed immediately.
Warning: You cannot delete a category that still contains decks. Remove all decks first by deleting them or moving them to another category (see Move Cards).

2.4 — Expanding and Collapsing Categories

Each category in the sidebar can be expanded (showing the decks inside it) or collapsed (hiding the decks to save space). This is purely visual — collapsing a category does not delete or change anything.

How to expand or collapse a single category

  1. Look at the left side of the category name in the sidebar. You will see a small arrow (triangle) icon.
  2. Click the arrow. If the category is currently collapsed, it expands to show the decks inside. If it is expanded, it collapses to hide them.

Alternatively, you can simply click the category name itself to toggle between expanded and collapsed states.

2.5 — Collapse All / Expand All Buttons

If you have many categories and want to quickly tidy up or reveal everything at once, use the bulk buttons at the top of the sidebar.

How to collapse or expand all categories at once

  1. At the top of the left sidebar, find the row of action buttons.
  2. Click the Collapse All button (double up-arrows icon) to close every category so that only category names are visible.
  3. Click the Expand All button (double down-arrows icon) to open every category so that all decks are visible.
Tip: Collapsing all categories is a quick way to get a clean overview when your sidebar becomes crowded with many decks.
