Backup & Restore

Protect your data by creating regular backups. If something goes wrong, you can restore from a backup to get everything back exactly as it was.

8.1 — Settings Hub Navigation

All advanced settings are accessed through the Settings Hub — a dedicated area of the app with a left-hand navigation pane listing every settings section.

How to open the Settings Hub

  1. Look at the title bar at the very top of the MnemoDeck window.
  2. Click the gear icon () on the right side of the title bar.
  3. The Settings Hub opens. On the left you see a navigation pane listing all sections: Backup, Restore, Export Deck, Import Deck, Import JSON Deck, Move Cards, Logs, Options, and Legal & About.
  4. Click any item in the left navigation pane to go to that section.

8.2 — Backup

A backup saves a complete copy of all your data — every category, deck, card, tag, and setting — into a single backup file. You should back up regularly to protect against data loss.

How to create a backup

  1. Open the Settings Hub (gear icon in the title bar) and click Backup in the left navigation pane.
  2. You will see a backup location text box showing where the backup file will be saved.
  3. To change the location, click the Browse button. A folder picker opens — navigate to the folder where you want to save your backup and select it.
  4. Click the Start Backup button.
  5. A progress indicator appears showing the backup is in progress. Wait for it to finish.
  6. When the backup is complete, a success message appears. Your backup file is now saved in the chosen location.
Tip: Save backups to an external drive or a cloud-synced folder (like OneDrive or Google Drive) for extra safety. If your computer has a problem, your backup will still be safe.

8.3 — Restore

Restoring from a backup replaces all current data in MnemoDeck with the data from the backup file. This is useful if you need to recover lost data or move your cards to a new computer.

Warning: Restoring a backup overwrites all existing data. Any categories, decks, cards, and settings you have created since the backup was made will be permanently replaced. Make sure this is what you want before proceeding.

How to restore from a backup

  1. Open the Settings Hub (gear icon) and click Restore in the left navigation pane.
  2. Read the warning message carefully. It explains that restoring will overwrite all current data.
  3. Click the Browse button to locate your backup file on your computer.
  4. Select the backup file and click Open.
  5. Click the Start button to begin the restore process.
  6. A progress indicator appears. Wait for the restore to complete.
  7. When finished, a message appears with a Restart App button.
  8. Click Restart App to restart MnemoDeck with the restored data.

After restarting, MnemoDeck loads with all the data from the backup file. Everything you had at the time of the backup — categories, decks, cards, tags, quiz history, and settings — will be exactly as it was.
